The top leadership of the Taliban was killed in his office
The Taliban governor of Afghanistan’s northern Balkh province has been killed in an explosion at his office. Mohammad Dawood Muzamil is the highest-ranking government official killed since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
Violence in Afghanistan has declined significantly since the Taliban’s return to power, but prominent Taliban sympathizers and others have been regularly targeted. According to the local police, the cause of the explosion is not clear and no party has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a tweet that an investigation is underway. Balkh police spokesman Mohammad Asif Waziri said the explosion took place on the second floor of the office at around 9 a.m. on Thursday.
A day earlier, provincial Taliban officials said they had killed eight insurgents in the Balkh capital of Mazer Sharif. However, he did not say which rebel group these individuals were affiliated with.
